Beyond the distributed monolith
Blanca Garcia Gil, BBC
The BBC’s Audience Platform Data team collects, transforms and delivers billions of events each day from audience interactions with mobile apps and web sites such as BBC News, BBC Sport, iPlayer and Sounds.
Two years ago we migrated to a new analytics provider and we took this as an opportunity to re-architect our distributed monolith. We will share how we designed our new microservices architecture so that it is easier to test, scale to cater for increasing demand, keep track of the message flow and replay errors without stopping the rest of the messages from being processed. We will review how we applied microservices principles together with the lessons learnt from our previous architecture.
Key takeaways:
- Hear how BBC re-architected a distributed monolith and applied microservices best practices
- Find out how we applied the lessons learnt from operating our previous architecture
Blanca Garcia Gil is a Principal Systems Engineer at BBC. She currently works on a team whose aim is to provide a reliable platform at petabyte scale for data engineering and machine learning. She leads a team focused on improving access to data and making sure the data warehouse is performant and reliable for business critical workloads.

Why Microservices Fail
Eberhard Wolff, INNOQ
Even microservices are not the solution to all problems, but actually
pose some new challenges. This presentation shows why microservice
projects fail. It is not only about technical aspects but also about
organization and architecture. Of course, the presentation also shows
how to successfully avoid these pitfalls in order to make profitable use
of microservices and to get the most out of this approach.
Eberhard Wolff has 15+ years of experience as an architect and consultant - often on the intersection of business and technology. He is a Fellow at INNOQ in Germany. As a speaker, he has given talks at international conferences and as an author, he has written more than 100 articles and books e.g. about Microservices and Continuous Delivery. His technological focus is on modern architectures – often involving Cloud, Continuous Delivery, DevOps, or Microservices.
