London .NET September 2023 with Lotte Pitcher and David Whitney

Details

For our September meetup, we're back at Accurx in Shoreditch, with guest speakers Lotte Pitcher presenting an introduction to Umbraco for .NET developers, and David Whitney telling us how he built a Gameboy emulator in .NET.

Lotte Pitcher: If Carlsberg did .NET Content Management Systems

Umbraco is a leading .NET content management system used by brands such as Carlsberg, Volvo and The European Union. Perhaps you’ve seen it mentioned in job ads, or had a play with it years ago in the .NET Framework days. It offers developers high flexibility, security and scalability whilst giving content editors an easy-to-use interface and intuitive editing experience. It’s free and Open-Source, and supported by a community of friendly, highly-engaged developers.

In this talk we shall learn what a .NET developer needs to know to get started with modern (.NET 7) Umbraco. We shall review its key features, including recently added ones such headless and EF core support, and where the product is heading in the future. Enough for you to determine if Umbraco is a good fit for current or upcoming projects, or if you want to extend your .NET skills and learn something new.
Lotte Pitcher has been building websites for longer than she cares to remember and now builds .NET apps and Umbraco websites. She is an Umbraco & Microsoft MVP, a long-time open-source contributor and a passionate advocate for being an active member of a healthy, inclusive tech community. David Whitney: Building a Gameboy Emulator in .NET

A teardown of building and porting Game Boy emulators, written in cross-platform C# running in .NET. We'll deal with how machine code really works, how it's translated to opcodes, and how real time emulation works, all in this hour-long deep dive into emulation in .NET.

Expect to learn about low level emulation, software porting, building debuggers and why you should always do things for fun.

David Whitney is the founder of Electric Head Software, working as an independent software consultant based in London focusing on iterative software delivery, developer mentoring and cultural change - mostly working with London-based organisations and start-ups. David has previously served as the chief coding technical architect for JustGiving, and helped market-leading organisations including JUST-EAT, Trainline and Vodafone improve their technical capabilities.
