LOPUG Meetup on Thursday 20th October, 6.30pm onwards

Details

Summer is over, school’s back in session and LOPUG is getting back to basics!

In this meetup we’ve got talks aimed at introducing the key concepts within Cloud Foundry, BOSH and Concourse CI:

• Jatin Naik and Maria Ntalla, Software Engineers @ Pivotal

"Developing with Cloud Foundry 101 - Maria Ntalla & Jatin Naik, Pivotal"

Do you want to get started with Cloud Foundry - but think that setting it up takes too long? Do you want to start using services but don’t have a BOSH director setup? Join us while we give you a quick introduction to the fundamentals and then take you through the whole process of writing, deploying and updating apps on Cloud Foundry.

In this session, we will iterate on an application, demonstrating how you can get started on Cloud Foundry without even leaving your workstation - and push to a remote Cloud Foundry when ready. You will also learn how to use services from your CF application.

• Dan Young, CEO @ EngineerBetter

"Why does multi-cloud matter and how does BOSH make it possible?"

In this talk Dan will explore the concept of technology lock-in and explain why portability between clouds is valuable.

He'll also take a look at how teams and businesses can use BOSH to make better choices regarding their investment in cloud platform skills and technology.

• Benedict Dodd, Director @ Armakuni

"Your build is probably broken, you just don't know it yet"

Modern software development needs a modern CI; the patterns you follow when developing your code should also be reinforced by your CI pipeline. No snowflakes. No unstable results. No unscalable bottlenecks. Everything as code.

We will discuss the patterns that we want a CI solution to follow and why they are important, especially, but not exclusively, in the pursuit of continuous delivery and the adoption of DevOps and PaaS. You should leave feeling optimistic that tomorrow you can use Concourse CI to regain control of your pipeline, dramatically increasing velocity and consistency and, most importantly, reduce the time it takes to deliver value to users and receive feedback.

We've also got special guest:

• Casey West, Principle Technologist CF @ Pivotal

"Said no CEO ever: Things that don't matter in the cloud"

Cloud adoption has made some aspects of our jobs irrelevant, but this is a good thing. . . .Well, it’s a good thing as long as we know what doesn’t matter anymore. (“Doesn’t matter” really means “solved problem.”) It’s critically important to avoid spending time and resources on solved problems. If you’re new to the cloud, it might surprise you just how many problems are considered solved at this point.

Casey explores technical skills no longer required in an operationally mature, cloud-based organization; explains why each skill is no longer worth doing manually and offers a collection of open source software solutions that require minimal human effort. If you’re a sysadmin curious about the cloud or part of an organization with an initiative to move to the cloud, this talk will save you time and money. You’ll be a hero in your organization—move fast, reduce risk, and stand on the shoulders of giants.

So, please come along if you’re a CF / BOSH / Concourse CI beginner or if you’re an expert looking to brush up on the basics, or if you’re anywhere between and just want to come and hear some excellent talks, and have some food and fun!

The LOPUG team.
