New Year, New Meetup event! We're back for 2025 and happy to be back at the Atomico offices. We have two fantastic speakers, the agenda is:

  • 6:30pm - arrive, drinks, networking
  • 7:00pm - Talk 1: Platform Engineering - The Past, The Present and The Future (in the context of Kubernetes and CNCF)

In December of 2023 Mauricio published his first book about Kubernetes and Platform Engineering. But publishing these days is not as it used to be. He's been working on the book since early 2021 and it was officially announced (as Early Access Content) in September 2021.

In this session he will share the reasons why he started writing the book back in 2021 and how the industry was shifting gears into bringing Platform engineering into the forefront of the Kubernetes adoption journey. Mauricio will highlight the trends that he's observed in the industry since the book was printed and make predictions of what to expect in 2025.

Speaker: Mauricio (Salaboy) Salatino, Senior Software Engineer @ Diagrid
Mauricio works as an Open Source Software Engineer at @Diagrid, contributing to and driving initiatives for the Dapr OSS project. Mauricio also serves as co-chair of the Application Development Working Group for the CNCF. He published a book titled Platform Engineering on Kubernetes for Manning Publishing and previously worked at VMware and Red Hat, building tools to help developers be more productive.

  • 7.30pm - more drinks, food & networking
  • 7.45pm - Talk 2: Don't Let Me Down! Effective Solution Design for Critical Applications and Platforms

Keeping applications running in adverse circumstances isn't easy, and as well as being stressful, it can expose an organisation to many different risks. We will explore how to define application criticality, discuss examples of where things can go wrong, explore some of our core non functional and security requirements, and review some example deployment scenarios that help keep things running when they need to most.
This inevitably affects our platform capabilities and org structure, so we'll also look at what we can all do as platform managers, architects and engineers to keep our business running when it needs to most.

Speaker: Simon Forster, Cloud Architect and Engineer
Simon Forster is a CNCF Ambassador and cloud native technology architect and engineer based in London. Simon has extensive experience working in heavily regulated financial institutions on the design, delivery and security of critical cloud native applications. He has a specific focus on ensuring cloud native technologies deliver against business goals. As co-chair of the CNCF Cartografos Group, Simon developed and co-authored the CNCF Cloud Native Maturity Model

  • 8.15pm onwards - drinks and networking.
