Summer Solstice at The Prospect of Whitby

The Prospect Of Whitby, 57 Wapping Wall, E1W 3SH - https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/prospect-of-whitby - is right on the riverside, with some of the best river views of any pub in London from the beer garden and rooftop terrace, so that's where we'll be if the weather's fine.

There's been a pub on this site since 1520 and, although only the flagstone floor is 'original', the current Grade II listed building dates back to the 19th century, so still quite old. That, and the pub's colourful past, for which it was once known as the Devil's Tavern, mean it is steeped in history and I can elaborate on this on the night if anyone's interested.

The nearest station is Wapping on the London Overground - the exit is at the front of the train heading southbound but at the back of the train heading northbound. Unless you're very physically fit (or hoping to get that way), I would take the lift rather than the stairs. If you're travelling from South London, please note that there's no Overground service between Crystal Palace or West Croydon and New Cross Gate on this date.

For those travelling from Central London, the most obvious connections are at Whitechapel (District, Hammersmith & City and Elizabeth lines) or Canada Water (Jubilee Line). As the travelling will be a bit more challenging than normal for some of us, I have put up slightly earlier starting and finishing times so that there's a bit more leeway to get home at the end of the night.

Turn right when you leave the station, walk along Wapping High Street for 200 yards or so and then bear left into Garnet Street. Turn first right into Wapping Wall and you'll find the pub about 300 yards ahead of you. The low-level road sign for Wapping Wall was hidden behind parked cars when I did the recce, but there's a prominent estate agent called Dexters on the corner where you need to turn.
