Talk 1: Why don't more real-world robots use Visual SLAM? by Owen Nicholson, CEO of Slamcore

Presentation Abstract - Vision-based SLAM has been around for over a decade, but very few companies have launched a successful commercial product based on this technology. Poor accuracy, reliability and high compute costs have made vSLAM only really appropriate for cool demos and one-off PoC's. In this presentation we will discuss why it is so hard to build a commercially scalable vSLAM solution and what SLAMcore are doing to level the playing field.

Bio - Owen Nicholson, CEO of Slamcore, has over 15 years of experience in deep-tech commercialization in a range of positions including for the UK Government and Dyson. Since founding SLAMcore he has led the company through three investment rounds securing funding from top investors around the world, closed deals with some of the biggest companies on the planet and been accepted on the prestigious SME Leaders scheme from the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Talk 2: Multi-Sensor Robot Navigation and Subterranean Exploration by Maurice Fallon Associate Professor and Royal Society University Research Fellow at University of Oxford

Talk Description:
In this talk I will overview the work of my research group at Oxford (Dynamic Robot Systems). I will focus on multi-sensor state estimation and mapping to enable robots to navigate and explore dirty, dark and dusky environments - with an emphasis on underground exploration with quadrupeds. Furthermore I will describe our work on trajectory optimization for dynamic motion planning. I will also overview our research done as part of the Cerberus Team in the DARPA SubT Challenge and finish by briefly describing the strategy of the team took in winning the competition.

Bio:
Maurice Fallon is an Associate Professor and Royal Society University Research Fellow at University of Oxford. His research is focused on probabilistic methods for localization and mapping. He has also made research contributions to state estimation for legged robots and is interested in dynamic motion planning and control.

Maurice has worked in robot mapping and SLAM for about 15 years in domains as diverse as marine robots detecting mines, humanoid robots (DARPA Robotics Challenge) and mapping radiation in nuclear facilities.
