What we’re about
Despite it being ridiculously tempting to press the ‘generate description with AI’ button – I’m going to resist and type it out the ol’ timey way.
To put it succinctly: This is a ‘community’ for people who perform or are looking to perform Stand up comedy. At these events we’ll aim to do the following:
• Share material you’re working on and receive feedback.
• Chat about your recent gigs – the good and the bad!
• Receive tips/advice regarding your recent performances.
• Discuss the best ways to promote clips/make stuff go viral.
• Review/critique established comedians stand up shows.
• Weekly joke/material building exercises and tasks.
The ultimate goal of this Meet Up Group would be to start a weekly open mic night in Stratford (Which despite the huge population and fantastic transport links has no comedy nights). Once we’ve got a decent number of comedians who can commit to regularly performing, we can start approaching venues.
Why Am I Starting This?
Earlier this year, I took the plunge to start performing stand up because I was tired of the sitcom industry not wanting anything to do with unestablished writers. After 15 years, I was done with being told “We love it but come back to us when you’ve attached a celebrity or comedian to your script”. Maybe I will, maybe I won’t. Or Maybe I’ll become the ‘elusive talent’ they speak so highly of. Maybe I’ll be a ‘Stand up comedian’.
Aaand boy is it not easy. It’s a very different art form. And it will beat you up mentally more than any script rejection will. However, it’s ultimately very freeing as there’s far fewer gatekeepers. If you have the potential to be great, you can be. You can be undeniably great. Emphasis on ‘can be’, as it’s a long, arduous, trying path – and I’ve only taken baby steps so far. I believe to be great at stand up, you really need to just smash through those tough first 100 gigs. “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor”
I figured I can’t be the only one who’d like to be slightly less alone in the journey. So let’s unite like a secret underground communist/facist party, but with more laughs and less questionable opinions.
Heil Haha!
