Key Note Speaker: Ruth Chapman, co-founder of Matchesfashion.com
Founded in 1987 by Ruth and Tom Chapman, Matchesfashion.com, then known as Matches Fashion, started as a brick-and-mortar store in Wimbledon. At the time, they were the first multi-brand retailer to introduce Prada and Bottega Veneta to the UK market. Shortly after opening their first store, a standalone menswear store along with Max Mara’s first franchise store was opened in London in 1992. Today, Matchesfashion.com stocks 450 established and emerging brands and operates five stores, across London, including an exclusive townhouse in Marylebone dedicated to private shopping.
In 2006, seeing an e-commerce opportunity, Matchesfashion.com launched its online store featuring international shipping. Despite facing fierce competition from other online retailers such as Net-a-Porter, Matchesfashion.com successfully grew itself into a global e-commerce platform, with 80% of online orders coming from 176 international markets. While the company continues to have a brick-and-mortar presence in London, its online store currently contributes 95% of total revenues. In 2013, the company officially renamed itself to Matchesfashion.com and rebranded all of its physical stores with the same name as well.
In addition to its online and physical stores, Matchesfashion.com is also known for its online and print content platform, The Style Report. In 2015, Ruth and Tom Chapman stepped down as the co- CEOs and took on the role of co-chairman.
