Details

Come along for an evening walk from Pimlico station (Victoria line) to Battersea Park and Clapham Junction (trains and Overground). On the way, we'll see Battersea Power station, the Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park and the beautiful Albert Bridge illuminated.

We are still recovering from Covid times, and it would be good to slow down, relax and even hug a big tree in Battersea Park (you don't have to!). We shall have a zen moment, reloading ourselves with positive energy at the Peace Pagoda.

Walk length 3.5 miles (5.4 km) approx. linear.

Though the walk is short, you need to be fit and able to walk at a normal pace. The ending time may vary, depending on the pace and weather.

THE PEACE PAGODA

It was erected in 1984, following a gift from the Venerable Nichidatsu Fuji, Founder of the Japanese Buddhist movement. Following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he pledged to build pagodas worldwide as shrines to peace. (Source: timeout.com)

BATTERSEA POWER STATION

In fact, there are two twin power stations. The first was built in 1929 and it closed down in 1975. The second was build in 1945 and closed down in 1983. The building was listed Grade II in October 1980. Battersea power station has figured on a Beatles album, and more famously on Pink Floyds 'Animals'. An inflatable pig was launched over the station but the tethering broke and the balloon had to be shot down.

We'll have optional drinks at The Asparagus pub at the end of the walk.

The nearest station is Clapham Junction (7 min approx.) for trains to Victoria, Waterloo and Overground. There is a bus stop near the pub to catch the 345 bus to Clapham Common (Northern) or Kensington across the road. Though the area is safe at that time, I'm happy to walk with you to the station if you wish.

WEATHER POLICY

The walk might be cancelled the day before or shortened on the day if bad weather is forecast. BBC weather https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather
