Before becoming a software developer myself, I used to headhunt/recruit technology consultants and software developers (mainly at very senior levels but also junior/mid-level). So I’ve spoken to hundreds of developers about the challenges they’re facing in their current roles and what their career goals are. I’ve also spoken to lots of companies and hiring managers about what they’re looking for when hiring. One thing that was particularly striking was how hiring managers consistently stated that developers they interviewed were excellent on paper but lacked the soft skills required to work well with the team, manage team members and clearly explain complex problems/solutions.
