Poetic Empowerment Workshop
Details
The Poetic Empowerment Workshop, led by Anniwaa Buchie, invites participants to explore poetry as a space for voice, reflection, and connection. Through poetry, gentle movement, discussion, and reflective writing, participants build self-expression, creativity, and confidence in a supportive environment. Sessions include sharing meaningful poems or lyrics, group activities, and writing original work, with a focus on how poetry helps us feel, connect, and grow rather than formal analysis.
Anniwaa Buachie is an award-winning Ghanaian-British actress, writer, director, and producer whose work centres on storytelling across poetry, theatre, film, television, and audio. Her creative practice explores themes of identity, migration, memory, and the cultural connections between Africa and Great Britain.
Anniwaa stars in the BBC series Phoenix Rise and received an AudioFile Earphones Award for narrating The Teller of Secrets by Bisi Adjapon. Her voice work includes major international productions including Archer and Marvel’s X-Men ’97, while her screen work has appeared on platforms including STARZ. In 2022, she won Best Lead Actor at Australia’s Short + Sweet Film Festival.
As the founder and former artistic director of Golden Delilah, Anniwaa championed bold Black female-led storytelling through theatre and performance. She has collaborated with Emmy Award-winning writer and Jamaican Poet Laureate Kwame Dawes on the films Moon Over Aburi and February Light, both exploring diasporic histories and poetic narratives across continents.
Alongside her performance work, Anniwaa is deeply passionate about arts education and community engagement. She created Speak Up!, an online arts programme for young people in Los Angeles, designed to encourage creativity, self-expression, and dialogue through the performing and visual arts.
