Brighton has many statues - from members of the royal family to variety hall performers, from local politicians to sportsmen.
But why were they chosen as statues? What do they reveal to us about the city’s past (and present) ? Are they looking down on us? Do we look up to them or just walk on by…
On this tour we will consider some of the best known ones, starting with the Cheeky Chappie, trying not to show too much lèse-majesté to our royal monuments before making our way down (sprinting?) to that of our local middle-distance runner and gold medalist in Moscow on Madeira Drive.
The final sections of this tour will involve some longer walking stretches between statues - so while you won’t need Steve Ovett’s level of fitness, you will need to be able to cover some lengthier distances!
It should take c 60-80 minutes. There are about 6,000+ steps. Please note that as well as distance this tour does include negotiating at least two flights of steps down to the seafront.
NB Meeting point is diagonally opposite the Theatre Royal; near the Max Miller statue.
Our guest guide Russ invites appreciative donations of £5.00 per person on the day.
