If you were from the "respectable " classes in the 1700's a quick dip in the briny was far more complicated than it is now. Bathing machines would protect your modesty as you were chauffeured in and out of the water. This was big business in Brighton and up until the early 20th Century hundreds of these machines lined the beaches .

Join actor , storyteller and parliamentary tour guide Nick Richmond for a journey through the seaside phenomenon of the Bathing Machine . Popularised by the Prince Regent and Queen Victoria , recommended by Dr Richard Russell and pulled by the redoubtable Martha Gunn , the story of these aquatic changing spaces is the story of the rise of the popular seaside resort.

Along the way you'll hear stories of the " magical waters" of St Ann's Well , the rise of the "saltwater cure" and the life and work of bathers and dippers like Martha Gunn , whose job was to dip the rich and famous in the waters off Brighton beach .
