Bolsa Chica Wetlands Stroll

Details

Did you know that wetlands are crucial in supporting climate, biodiversity, clean water, migratory birds, and more?

Did you know that wetlands plants are specialists? They are specially adapted to this biome: they have to be able to tolerate salt and fresh water, as well as both dry and wet conditions. Most plants can’t do that! But these amazing plants absolutely can.

In California, we have lost (destroyed) over 95% of the original wetlands. It’s utterly heartbreaking. And, the Bolsa Chica Wetlands are testament to the importance of restoration work.

This beautiful restored wetlands site is home to so much wildlife! I’ve seen lizards, snakes, many species of insect; owls, and LOTS of seabirds, both migratory and resident.

It’s pretty flat, which makes for an easier hike.

Meet us in the northernmost parking lot, off of Warner Avenue just east of PCH. We’ll gather near the entrance to the trails. If the parking lot is full there is some additional parking a little ways up Warner near the houses; or you could try parking in the shopping center across the street AT YOUR OWN RISK—I don’t know what their parking policies are.

I DO NOT have access to MeetUp when I’m away from home/office. It’s not on my phone. If you are running late, then text me at 562-243-9963.

My intent is to walk at a slow to moderate pace, staying present to the surroundings. Walking quickly (as one does when exercise is the main goal) tends to disrupt the wildlife.

If you’re sick, or if you’ve possibly been exposed to COVID, please STAY HOME and join us when you’re in the clear.

This is an easier walk, but let’s not get complacent. Please bring everything you need to be safe and comfortable, including: Good hiking boots; water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, etc. Know your limitations and stay within them. All participants are entirely responsible for themselves.

This site apparently does house some rattlesnakes. According to the ranger station they’re shy and tend to slither away from people.

Please stay on trail and do not approach, contact or harass wildlife: this group has a zero tolerance policy for this.

Afterwards we will get coffee!

Let’s try Sweet Ellie’s:
5141 Warner Avenue, Huntington Beach CA 92649
It’s near the wetlands; it appears to have plenty of options and also outdoor seating.
Looking forward to seeing you at this event!
