Hike and visit to the Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservior

Difficulty Level: 3 out of 5

Distance: 6 km (approximate)

Time: 5 hours (approximate)

Description: Get ready for an unforgettable adventure on this national holiday, October 1

We’ll kick off our journey at the Tai Wai MTR Station and then either walk or take a taxi to the Hung Mui Kuk Trail/Barbecue Area, just 1.5 km away. Our destination? The remarkable Amah Rock! Standing 15 meters tall and perched at an elevation of 250 meters, this striking rock formation resembles a woman carrying a baby on her back. The legend behind it is both captivating and poignant, telling the tale of a woman who waited day after day for her husband to return from a fishing trip, only to be transformed into Amah Rock during a fierce thunderstorm.

After soaking in the story and the stunning views at Amah Rock, we’ll continue our exploration around Lion Rock Country Park. Along the way, we’ll pass the Eight Immortals Temple and the Lion Pavilion.

Highlight of the Event: Our adventure culminates at the Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir, located on Mission Hill. Built in 1904, this underground marvel features granite piers and distinct red brick arches reminiscent of Roman engineering. Once holding about 9,900 cubic meters of fresh water for Kowloon Tong, Sham Shui Po, and Tai Hang Tung, it was rediscovered in 2020 and granted Grade I historic status by the Antiquities Advisory Board in 2021. The government now offers guided tours, allowing visitors to explore the reservoir and learn about Hong Kong’s water supply history. The tour begins from Berwick Street in Shek Kip Mei, taking about 15 minutes to walk to the reservoir at the top of Mission Hill.
