HIKE: Tung Ping Chau

Details
Hike: Tung Ping Chau
Difficulty Level: 2 out of 5
Distance: 5 km (approximate)
Time: 6 hours (approximate)
Description: Tucked away in the northeast corner of Hong Kong, Tung Ping Chau is one of the territory’s most remote islands—and well worth the journey. Nicknamed the “flat island,” it’s known for its low elevation (just 48m at its highest point), calm waters, and unique horizontal sedimentary rock formations.
Part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, the island is a paradise for nature lovers, photographers, and geology enthusiasts. It’s protected as both a country park and marine park, offering a rich ecosystem and stunning coastal views.
Though it once had over 2,000 residents, only a few remain today. On weekends, descendants return to run small shops and dorms. Visitors can explore abandoned village homes, a Tin Hau temple, and a colonial-era training camp—all slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Getting there takes about 1 to 1.5 hours by ferry each way, so plan for a full-day adventure. Facilities are minimal, with a couple of shops and toilets, so be sure to bring your own food, water, and essentials.
If you're up for an off-the-beaten-path experience filled with history, geology, and natural beauty—this is the trip for you. Let’s make it happen!
