Hike: Lion Rock and visit to Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

Difficulty Level: 4 out of 5

Distance: 10 km (approximate)

Time: 5 hrs (approximate)

Description and Highlights:
We’ll be taking on a moderately challenging hike rated Level 4 out of 5, starting with a climb to Lion Rock. This iconic peak, named for its rocky formation that resembles a crouching lion, stands at 495 meters and offers stunning 360-degree views of Kowloon, Victoria Harbour, parts of Hong Kong Island (on clear days), and the New Territories. It’s a steep ascent, but the views are well worth the effort.

After reaching Lion Rock, we’ll continue on to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, where over 10,000 Buddha statues await—both inside and outside the temple. There’s no admission fee, and a small restaurant at the top offers refreshments. However, be sure to bring plenty of water and wear comfortable shoes, as the final stretch includes climbing 430 steep steps. Also, please be aware of monkeys in the area—they’re part of the local wildlife and may approach if they see food, so it’s best to keep snacks packed away. This will be a rewarding and memorable experience, so come prepared and ready to enjoy the journey!

What to bring:

  • 3-4 liters of water
  • Snacks to eat along the way (sandwich, fruits, nuts, etc)
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sunglasses
  • Headgear (cap/hat)
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray
  • In case of Rain: plan accordingly

Toilets: There are toilets at the start and end of the trail.

Stores: There are stores at the beginning and at the end of the trail. It is best to come prepared with water and snacks.

Meeting Point: Wong Tai Sin MTR - Exit A. Once everyone arrives, we'll either walk (my preference) or take a bus or taxi to the trailhead.

Time: 10:00 am (SHARP!)

IMPORTANT: Out of respect to the members that arrive on time, we will only be able to wait a maximum of 5 minutes. Should you arrive after 10:05 am, I will no longer be answering phone calls or responding to messages as I need to give my time and attention to those that have arrived on time.
