Hike: Tung Chung MTR to Tai O (via Ngong Ping)

Difficulty Level: 3.5 out of 5

Distance: 15.5 km (approximate)

Time: 5+ hours

Description:
Part 1: This is a two-part hike that starts at Tung Chung MTR Station and follows a valley trail up to Ngong Ping, which sits at about 482 meters next to the Big Buddha. The first section includes about 459 meters of elevation gain, plus an optional 23-meter climb to the top of the Big Buddha. This part is around 8-9 km, and along the way we'll pass Several small monasteries tucked into the valley. Once we reach Ngong Ping, you can choose to end the hike here and head back down by cable car, bus, or taxi.

Part 2: If you choose to continue, the second part takes us from Ngong Ping to Tai O. This final 7-8 km begins with a downhill stretch and then becomes mostly flat. This section also features monasteries, statues, gardens, and peaceful spots perfect for short moments of quiet. The overall route is new and does require an open mind and a sense of adventure, but the reward is the calm, serene atmosphere we'll experience throughout both sections.
