Chalking the Horse 02021

Details

In summer 02019 a group from Long Now London travelled to Oxfordshire to spend a day "chalking the horse" at Uffington. Our stated intent was to do this every year, helping the National Trust maintain this 3,000 year old geoglyph much as it has been maintained throughout its existence.

Drone footage of that day is here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpuNXCZWEg6NxKzramrsZetlUBZsGHZyY
(thanks, Peter Landers)

A Long Now piece about that visit can be found here: https://medium.com/the-long-now-foundation/what-a-prehistoric-monument-reveals-about-the-value-of-maintenance-4d1b89343984
(thanks, Ahmed Khabil)

Little did we know that in 02020 the horse would go a year unchalked due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In centuries past we know that the horse was only "scoured" every seven years (and there are probably times it went untended for longer), but the work still needs doing. Happily, the National Trust team on White Horse Hill have asked us for our help again in 02021.

Date & Time
The day for this gathering is set: Monday 23rd August 02021.
Chalking takes place from 10am until 4pm, after which we will walk to a nearby pub for drinks and (hopefully) food.

Travel
The exact plan for getting there and back will be confirmed how many of us are coming and from which directions. It is likely that (as in 02019) a group will travel by train from London Paddington to Stratford.
For those arriving by car, parking is available at the White Horse Hill site.
There is a possibility that some group members may take the weekend before to walk to the site along the Ridgeway. If this interests you, please send me a message.

Attendance
Please RSVP, saying if you are coming to/from London (and if not, where you are coming from).
Our numbers are limited to 25.
(TBC if that limit includes children)
Likeminded and interested new members are welcome. Please join the Meetup group and send me a message for confirmation.

COVID-19 Safety
This event is (very) outdoors, involves a relatively small group of people and taking place after the intended easing of COVID-19 safety restrictions. We will of course be keeping an eye on how rules and regulations change and doing all that we can to ensure that the work is carried out in a safe manner for all concerned.
