Day hike to San Mateo Peak
Details
This trail ascends 2.5 miles from the Morgan Trailhead in the Cleveland National Forest near the village of El Cariso.
The first half of the trail is shady and relatively flat. The second half climbs steadily to the rocky summit, and is mostly sunny depending on time of day. The summit is a great place for quiet introspection and a picnic lunch.
This trail is an under-utilized branch off the Morgan Trail and receives very little traffic--even on weekends. The entire trail and the summit can be done clothes-free, at the discretion of the individual.
Extension of this hike could include exploring the Morgan Trail southward from the same parking area. This is a gently sloping trail with views of the valley and interesting rock outcroppings.
A Forest Service day pass or Interagency Pass is required for parking at the trailhead.
