A LITTLE BHM TRIVIA FOR YOU...

here’s a wild black history fact you probably didn’t learn in school: the golf tee? yeah, that little wooden peg you stick in the ground before you stripe one? invented and patented in 1899 by dr. george grant. a black dentist.

born in 1847 to formerly enslaved parents, grant graduated from harvard dental school, one of the first black graduates in the school’s history, and soon after fell in love with golf. back then, players didn’t have tees. they carried buckets of sand from hole to hole and built little mounds to hit off. grant got tired of the ball shifting around in the sand, so he carved a wooden peg with a slightly concave top to cradle the ball.

so yeah, the TL;DR:, a black dentist hit a quick sidequest after graduating from harvard and invented the golf tee.
