Set in 1766 at a remote Hudson Bay Company outpost, the novel follows a secret expedition north after rumors of gold surface in the sub Arctic wilderness. What begins as ambition slowly hardens into violence in a landscape that does not forgive mistakes.

McGuire also wrote The North Water, later adapted into a BBC/AMC series.
