### Flash in the Pan, or the Real Deal? Live-Testing Microsoft's MAI-Code-1-Flash
Microsoft is no longer just hosting other companies' AI; they are shipping its own. In mid-2026, Microsoft AI launched a family of seven in-house "MAI" models, and one of them, MAI-Code-1-Flash, is already sitting in your GitHub Copilot model picker. It's small (5B active parameters), fast, and cheap, and it was trained directly on Copilot's own harness. But is it a flash in the pan, or the real deal for everyday .NET work?
This is a demo-heavy session built to answer that. We'll take a quick tour of the whole MAI family (image, voice, transcription, and reasoning), then go deep on MAI-Code-1-Flash inside GitHub Copilot. The centerpiece is two live bake-offs: MAI-Code-1-Flash implements a feature in a real ASP.NET Code API head-to-head against Claud and GPT - first against its own weight class, then against the heavyweights - scored live on speed, quality, and cost. Along the way, we'll tour the many faces of Copilot (VS Code chat and agent mode, the CLI, the cloud agent, Visual Studio, and more) so you leave knowing exactly when to reach for this model and when to escalate. Every demo and script goes home with you.
