Details

The Presentation

Join us for August Science Cafe featuring Dr. Brian Barnes and his talk "How Can Critical Thinking Help Me?"

What are some things that make something “critical thinking” instead of just “thinking”? How can I learn about my own thinking? What’s the value of doing that? In this small workshop, you’ll learn to think about your own thinking in even better ways than you’re already doing it.

Brian will give you some exercises you can do with yourselves or with others anytime, anywhere, that can help you get to the heart of the thinking you’re actually doing. He will also show you where there could be risks and hazards to good thinking.

These tools are for thinkers of any age, and they work even better in groups. Bring your closest thinkers and learn what’s possible with authentic critical thinking tools.

The Schedule

6:30 pm: Arrive and order.
7:00 to 7:30 Eat and chat.

The Guest Speaker

Dr. Brian Barnes holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Humanities and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Louisville. Barnes is a veteran of the US Army, along with other non-academic careers, and currently teaches face-to-face and online classes at several universities in traditional philosophy topics, along with courses in sustainability, critical thinking, and Japanese sword practice. He has co-authored articles examining critical thinking strategies and tactics for the National Teaching and Learning Forum and is the author of the textbook, The Central Question: Critical Engagement with Business Ethics (2013). Barnes co-hosts the weekly radio show, Critical Thinking for Everyone!, on 106.5 Forward Radio in Louisville, and he also created the critical thinking comic book series, Adventures in Critical Thinking.
