The Presentation
Join us for October Science Cafe - Dr. Don Osborn and "Causal Confusion"
Causal Confusion makes a distinction between short term and long term causation as well as no causation. The presentation argues that people often fail to make these distinctions and this can lead to dysfunctional outcomes. Why people are biased toward short term decisions is considered and some examples of where short term causation leads to bad outcomes is included.
The Schedule
6:30 pm: Arrive and order.
7:00 to 7:30 Eat and chat.
7:30 pm: The presentation begins. The presentation and a Q&A session will last from 7:30 to approximately 8:30pm.
The Cost
Free and open to the public, but donations are gratefully accepted, to help defray the speaker's gift and meal, and the meetup.com fee.
The Venue
We will be in the party room in the back at Impellizzeri's Pizza at 110 W. Main St. in downtown Louisville, on Main between 1st and 2nd. Parking is available on the street, in the “First and Main” Cressman Center Garage, or at the lot on the corner of 2nd and Main.
The Guest Speaker
Dr. Don R. Osborn is Emeritus Professor and Chairperson of the Psychology/Sociology/Criminal Justice Studies Department at Bellarmine University. He completed his B.A. in Psychology at Miami University (Ohio) and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Northwestern University. He has been at Bellarmine since 1972. His past teaching duties include Introductory Psychology and an interdisciplinary (IDC) course, Cross Cultural Sexuality. taught at the Junior and honors First year student levels. Over his career he has taught a variety of other courses, both in psychology, the MBA,Program, and interdisciplinary courses.
His research papers include published research on such topics as how mass transit subsidies affect ridership and presentations on factors influencing attitudes towards taxation policies. He also does published research on impression formation and how self-presentation strategies, personality factors, and subcultural group membership affect interpersonal attractiveness judgments.
