Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025
For three weeks every August, performers and artists from around the world bring their amazing shows to Edinburgh. They range from theatre, comedy, dance, music, musicals, circus, children’s shows, opera and cabaret.
Eight members from the Lovers of Black Theatre visited the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year and saw a range of excellent black shows including: In the Black, Ma Joyce’s Tales from the Parlour, Black to My Roots, Miles, Because, Strangers and Revelations, A Small-Town Northern Tale, Is This Normal? Njambi McGrath: Revolution (photo), and more! Many of these shows will be transferred to London theatres.
One of the good things about Fringe is that it is set in the beautiful city of Edinburgh. You can do some sightseeing up to the castle or visit a local museum. There are also many other festivals taking place at the same time including the International, Book, Art, Television and Film Festivals.
We were at the Fringe for five days. I think this is a good length of time to take in as much as you can in a short space of time. Accommodation can be quite expensive during this period, so we opted to stay at a university student hall of residence open during the summer. It was an eight-bedroom flat, all rooms ensuite with basic amenities.
The group also attended the Fringe of Colour party with other creatives, performers and guests. Fringe of Colour is a database created by Jess Brough dedicated to all the shows by people of colour taking part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This year Jess collaborated with Lula Mebrahtu and created the book Edinburgh Fringe with Spice.
I would recommend that members visit the Fringe festival at least once in their lifetime! This was my fourth visit, and I enjoyed sharing the experience with members of our group.
