St Bartholomew The Great is a church with an incredible atmosphere. It is even more breath-taking at twilight - what better time of the year than near Halloween?
The choir singing Choral Evensong at 5pm (start of church service) is a wonderful experience: the acoustics of the church suggest a huge crowd of singers when there are less than a dozen, and the harmonics are just lovely. I can't guarantee which of the two choirs it will be (the amateur or the professional choir), but I'm sure they both sound fantastic in this space.
If we get there at the right time, we'll be able to look around the church: Rahere's tomb, the Oriel Window, floor tiles from the 12th century, a golden statue and some other art, wall plaques, memorials (spooky and otherwise) - stories about a door and about a stolen sandal. There's lots to see and hear about.
If you want spooky: we'll be walking over gravestones, and there might be incense to add to the ambience. When you sit quietly to let your mind hang out, you can easily image that you might meet a ghost or two.
I need to find out more about the Ladies Chapel, I find that is has a weird, and slightly disturbing atmosphere that I can't put my finger on, you'll need to tell me what impression you get from this later addition to the building.
I am going to donate £5 to the upkeep of this wonderful church. Most people think that the Church of England pays for or at least contributes to the upkeep of this church, but that's not so. I'm sure they would appreciate it very much if you feel like a small donation too.
I am suggesting to meet at 3.30pm because the sun sets at 4:38pm that Sunday, this is pretty good timing to also listen to the Evensong singing - if you wish you can stay for the service but I would like to move on.
We will take a look at two pubs nearby with plenty of history to them, take a gentle stroll around and go for a drink in a suitable watering hole nearby.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
