Sunday Brunch: The Courage to Be Disliked
Details
What would change if we worried a little less about being liked, approved of, or understood by everyone around us?
For our first Lucerne Salon, we're taking inspiration from The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. The book is built around some provocative ideas about freedom, relationships, responsibility, and the influence other people's expectations have over the way we live.
📖 This is not a traditional book club. No chapter summaries, no prepared presentations, no pressure to have an intelligent opinion about the book. We'll use some of its most interesting ideas as starting points for a relaxed, host-guided conversation over Sunday brunch.
We might find ourselves talking about questions such as:
- How much of what we do is shaped by the desire to be liked?
- Where is the line between caring about others and living according to their expectations?
- Can we really choose not to let our past define us?
- Is being disliked sometimes simply the price of living more freely?
- What does it actually mean to take responsibility for your own life without becoming indifferent to other people?
You are welcome to read the book beforehand, but you don't need to have read it to join. We'll introduce the ideas and questions as we go. What matters much more is curiosity, openness, and a willingness to hear perspectives different from your own.
☕️ The format is informal: brunch, a small group, good conversation, and some prompts from the hosts when we need them. The aim isn't to reach the right conclusion. It's to leave having thought about something differently, and hopefully having got to know a few people beyond the usual small talk.
Come alone or with someone you know. New faces are very welcome.
📍 Table reserved at Mill'Feuille. You order and pay for your own brunch. Conversation in English.
