THE TALKS

CAANS: Consensus As A Network Service

The Paxos protocol is the foundation for building many fault-tolerant distributed systems and services. Given the importance of Paxos, any performance improvements to the protocol would have a significant impact on data-center infrastructure. We argue that consensus could someday be offered as a network service, with important performance benefits.

Huynh Tu Dang is a forth-year Ph.D. student in the Faculty of Informatics at Università della Svizzera Italiana. His research focuses on fault-tolerant distributed systems and application of software-defined networking (SDN). Previously, he worked as a research assistant at Ho Chi Minh International University and INRIA, Nice-Sophia Antipolis.

Apache Kafka for near real-time event processing

Apache Kafka is a platform for real-time event stream storage and processing that promises low latency, horizontal scalability, fault-tolerance and a simple programming model. Let’s see how this works and some lessons learnt in the context of processing millions of events per day for real-time cell-center analytics in QueueMetrics Live.

Lorenzo Emilitri, founder of Loway, loves building software that works and reliably solves real-world problems. Recently, he worked on creating and deploying hosted services for contact-centers, using Docker and Kafka to scale out and provide highly elastic and resilient services. Lorenzo has 15 years of experience in contact-centers, with implementations all over the world. Loves bayesian statistics, functional programming and spicy food.
