Derval O’Neil - Getting young people excited about STEM!
Based in Varese, northern Italy, CodEng - Code in simple English, has as its mission to inspire young people to get started writing code, experimenting with robotics and understanding the latest developments in the tech industry. In this talk, CodEng's founder, Derval O'Neill will share her approach for teaching digital skills to young people, including non-English speaking students. Topics will include generative AI, edutainment, international STEM camps and other approaches she uses to get students excited about acquiring digital skills.
Derval is an expert in teaching coding to middle and high school students, helping them to build video games using Python, develop customised chatbots using Open AI’s API key, create web pages with Javascript and program a range of devices from Lego Spike robots to Arduino and Raspberry Pi. She is also an early proponent of the teaching of Swift Playgrounds to develop apps directly on the iPad, in particular as part of recent code camps to Dubai and Silicon Valley.
CodEng was founded almost eight years ago and since then, many alumni from the thousands of students that have taken a CodEng course, have been accepted to computer science and related engineering courses across Europe such as Bocconi in Milan, the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands to name a few.
