American society hides death and dying from public view and treats it as a topic to be avoided. Yet most societies and religions have very specific ideas of how to dispose of the dead respectfully, ideas that connect to their values and cosmologies.
By hiding from death are we denying ourselves something important? What do we lose when we treat death as a forbidden topic rather than a natural process? And how do we change?
