What we’re about
Welcome to "Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg"!
Please read all of the below carefully before you apply to become a group member.
What is YAHGIL about?
This group is about hiking in Luxembourg.
- Most times REALLY in Luxembourg, but sometimes in the surrounding countries, like Belgium, France, or Germany.
- Most times it is ONLY about hiking, but sometimes it may include picnics, swimming, or barbecue.
- Most times it will not rain, we promise! And if it does, we apologize in advance, but we will hike anyway :)
- Most times it will be brisk walks between 15 and 20km, but sometimes it can be just a light promenade. In winter it might be sometimes too cold for more than 10km.
Who can apply?
Everyone passionate about hiking is welcome.
If you are not trained at all, you might consider not joining the hard ones first, but once in a while there will be hikes suitable for beginners, just read the description for each event carefully.
We are dog-friendly, and if your dog is friendly with people and other dogs, feel free to bring it along!
We expect a "clearly recognizable profile photo", to keep fakes and spammers out.
If there is any reason for not having such a photo, let's talk about it. Send us a message if your application was rejected or not answered, and make sure that we can reply, check your mailbox settings.
Who are we?
The group owner has been hiking in Luxembourg and the greater region since early 2019. Over time, several co-organizers have joined and we're able to organize hikes almost every weekend, unless all of us are out of town at the same time.
If you're interested in organizing hikes as well, let us know, and you may become an organizer in the group
What are we looking for?
We look for beautiful routes, new ones to explore, and the best ones to be repeated occasionally.
And we're looking for nice people to join us, good discussions during the hikes, but also enjoying the silence and the sound of nature.
If you happen to know a beautiful route, we're always open for suggestions, but be aware that we cannot consider every idea and we cannot promise if and when we go somewhere.
What do we expect from you?
- Be on time if possible, and if you're late, let us know immediately. There is some tolerance and we wait for you if we know you're coming, but don't let it become a habit
- Unsubscribe as soon as you know you can't make it, even if it is 5 minutes before or after the official start of the event, it makes checking the participant list much easier and your spot can be taken by someone from the waiting-list.
- Use public transport if we provide information about it, or the carpool to be eco-friendly and reduce the amount of cars that are used
Member contribution
While the membership in MeetUp is free for normal users like you, the group owners have to pay a subscription, which has constantly increased over the years.
I have set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe with the fictitious goal of "1 EUR per group member", and you can contribute whatever you feel comfortable with.
Be it 1 EUR per year, 1 EUR per hike, or 1 EUR per km (just kidding).
Let me know if the link doesn't work or you need to use a different way, like Payconiq or cash.
It's completely voluntary, but it helps a lot to cover the MeetUp subscription and all the small things that add up during the year.
Final remarks
There are comprehensive charters existing in other groups, with dozens of rules, but we try to get around it without that, although most of the listed points absolutely make sense and they are valid here as well, but without the need to state it. Our group, our rules.
The necessary legal minimum to claim:
"All Events are at your own risk, there is no liability by the hosts for any damage. Also, each participant is responsible for respecting the sanitary measures that might be in place at the particular moment, like distance and mask-wearing."
If you made it here, congratulations!
Welcome to YAGHIL, we're looking forward to hiking with you!
Cheers,
Jens.

See all- 🍕 Mirador educational pizza trail [12 or 31km] 🍕Steinfort Gemeng, Steinfort
All right, I promised for 🍕 lovers I gonna take you to this place one day where you can eat unlimited amount of 🍕🍕🍕 s for 13 EUR.
This place does exist 🌴 although getting there and back will be a fun task.
We are going to Belgium this time, not far from the border:https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/steinfort-mirador-educational-trail-fb0650f
The main trail is 17km + 2x7km there and back from the Pizza hut, if we do the whole thing expect 31 km.
It starts at the nature and forest center Mirador in the historic small town of Steinfort - a Roman road used to lead here. It goes through rustling forests and you always have wonderful views of the Luxembourg-Belgian border region.
As you can see I have extended this trail with about +7 km, mostly on bike roads and car roads until the Pizza Hut:

The magical thing about this Pizza Hut here is their pizza buffet, if you don't believe it here is the menu:
https://restaurants.pizzahut.be/fr/pizza-buffet?search=1
The good news:
- It is Belgium ... the elevation profile for this whole trail is about 400m :D
- You can eat unlimited amount of pizzas for 2 hours, they keep refilling all pizzas just like in other buffet type restaurants
- We will have the longest lunch break of all hikes until everybody is full
- Nice 24C cloudy weather, we won't be sweating (this date was chosen as the last section of the trail is completely on the open on bike roads, so we won't get much sun exposure)
The bad news:
- As the public transport is not clear how it operates from that area, we will walk back to Luxembourg, at least we can walk off the food what we eat. There will be two options, the 7km is a must but if we want to end the hike we can skip the northern part of the trail and walk straight back to Steinfort on the car road N4.
- Pizzahut is open until 21:30 but the pizza buffet is only between 12:00-14:00 so we have to get there early. This is why we will do the quickest southern 5km part of the trail + the 7km till the Pizza place. Easy 12km almost flat
- Coming back with bus... it is possible to have the pizza after 12km and go back to Arlon with bus and take train back to Lux but good luck to find out the schedule for this bus especially on the weekends, the name of the stop is WEYLER Grand Route, 6700 Arlon, Belgium. There seems to be a 3.2km pedestrian walkable residential road back to Arlon gare for those who are interested the rest of us will just walk back to Luxembourg: https://maps.app.goo.gl/7gwRxgxz4X8M1YD88
Start time: 09:05 😭 Steinfort Gemeng bus stop (take bus 812 leaving at 08:37 from Etoile).I know it hurts and nobody wants to wake up early but this way we can comfortably get there by noon even if we encounter some detours or road closures. For this event coming with car and offering carpooling is highly recommended:
http://www.groupcarpool.com/t/ga2r7v
End time: around 17:00 if you do the whole hike
What to bring:
- 1 L water is enough for this trail as you can refill
- Chilly oils and spices for pizza (they won't mind won't they 😄)
- ID card as we cross country borders
- We going through forests so protection against ticks
- Sun cream, hat, sun glasses
Best is not to eat at all, it will be a lunch+breakfast+brunch+dinner together type of event.
Reservation is not mandatory but I made one anyway for 8 ppl currently so just answer the question (by Friday latest and I can extend it), as there is nothing there those who don't want to eat pizza can finish the hike on their own ending up with 17km (the original red color path on Alltrails), bring GPS because we will split.
