What we’re about
Welcome to "Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg"!
Please read all of the below carefully before you apply to become a group member.
What is YAHGIL about?
This group is about hiking in Luxembourg.
- Most times REALLY in Luxembourg, but sometimes in the surrounding countries, like Belgium, France, or Germany.
- Most times it is ONLY about hiking, but sometimes it may include picnics, swimming, or barbecue.
- Most times it will not rain, we promise! And if it does, we apologize in advance, but we will hike anyway :)
- Most times it will be brisk walks between 15 and 20km, but sometimes it can be just a light promenade. In winter it might be sometimes too cold for more than 10km.
Who can apply?
Everyone passionate about hiking is welcome.
If you are not trained at all, you might consider not joining the hard ones first, but once in a while there will be hikes suitable for beginners, just read the description for each event carefully.
We are dog-friendly, and if your dog is friendly with people and other dogs, feel free to bring it along!
We expect a "clearly recognizable profile photo", to keep fakes and spammers out.
If there is any reason for not having such a photo, let's talk about it. Send us a message if your application was rejected or not answered, and make sure that we can reply, check your mailbox settings.
Who are we?
The group owner has been hiking in Luxembourg and the greater region since early 2019. Over time, several co-organizers have joined and we're able to organize hikes almost every weekend, unless all of us are out of town at the same time.
If you're interested in organizing hikes as well, let us know, and you may become an organizer in the group
What are we looking for?
We look for beautiful routes, new ones to explore, and the best ones to be repeated occasionally.
And we're looking for nice people to join us, good discussions during the hikes, but also enjoying the silence and the sound of nature.
If you happen to know a beautiful route, we're always open for suggestions, but be aware that we cannot consider every idea and we cannot promise if and when we go somewhere.
What do we expect from you?
- Be on time if possible, and if you're late, let us know immediately. There is some tolerance and we wait for you if we know you're coming, but don't let it become a habit
- Unsubscribe as soon as you know you can't make it, even if it is 5 minutes before or after the official start of the event, it makes checking the participant list much easier and your spot can be taken by someone from the waiting-list.
- Use public transport if we provide information about it, or the carpool to be eco-friendly and reduce the amount of cars that are used
Member contribution
While the membership in MeetUp is free for normal users like you, the group owners have to pay a subscription, which has constantly increased over the years.
I have set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe with the fictitious goal of "1 EUR per group member", and you can contribute whatever you feel comfortable with.
Be it 1 EUR per year, 1 EUR per hike, or 1 EUR per km (just kidding).
Let me know if the link doesn't work or you need to use a different way, like Payconiq or cash.
It's completely voluntary, but it helps a lot to cover the MeetUp subscription and all the small things that add up during the year.
Final remarks
There are comprehensive charters existing in other groups, with dozens of rules, but we try to get around it without that, although most of the listed points absolutely make sense and they are valid here as well, but without the need to state it. Our group, our rules.
The necessary legal minimum to claim:
"All Events are at your own risk, there is no liability by the hosts for any damage. Also, each participant is responsible for respecting the sanitary measures that might be in place at the particular moment, like distance and mask-wearing."
If you made it here, congratulations!
Welcome to YAGHIL, we're looking forward to hiking with you!
Cheers,
Jens.
Upcoming events (1)
See all- 🎵 Dinant hike + jazz rally [25km] 🎵Gare de Dinant, Dinant
The wooded area in the municipality of Dinant receives many walkers every year. The wide range and the beautiful nature ensure great popularity. The beautiful area around the river Maas provides a unique landscape, with a nice balance of wide fields and green forests. While following this walking route you will also see the village of Waulsort. 🏞️
The hike is brought to you by Krisztina, I have imported it into Alltrails for convenience:
https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/dinant-211ed78?u=m&sh=4kcjgp
Nothing more than an average 25km hike with about 🔺 800m 🔻 elevation overall everybody can do it.
There will be also a jazz festival during the event for those who are interested:
From Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 July 2025 -> Music lovers can listen to their favorite artists in the city where the saxophone was invented. The Dinant Jazz Festival will enjoy the beautiful setting of the Leffe Abbey. Magic awaits.
IMPORTANT: Only buy ticket for this if you are coming with your own car, don't rely on other "possible" drivers. The tickets will probably sell out by next week.
https://www.dinantjazz.com/en/event/ticket-dinant-jazz-samedi-26-juillet-11/register
This starts at 18:00 so we should ideally start the hike around 10:00, with a comfortable 4km/h pace and half an hour lunch-break we can finish by 17:00 easily.
IMPORTANT: Drivers wanted! This area is inaccessible with public transport. The only way to get there is with car therefore I have setup a carpool.
https://groupcarpool.com/t/4y0fph
I set an RSVP date to next Thursday noon. Please only sign up as a driver or passenger if you are 100% certain that you will participate! In case of there are no drivers this event WILL BE CANCELLED and replaced by Mullerthal D.
The route is 141km, about 1,5 hours: https://maps.app.goo.gl/FGRnP9ANoYLmX9Z5A
The drivers should indicate the pickup point, but the usual Glacis (for the North) and Bonnevoie cactus (for the South of Lux city) are convenient. Recommended pickup time is 8:30 or earlier. In case of traffic jams, road closures we will wait for everybody to arrive before we start +-1hr is still acceptable, we might shorten the lunch-break and cut off some parts of the hike.
It is a small town add to that there is the jazz rally so be prepared for difficulties for finding parking spot. Those who are not interested to finish at Dinant can find a parking lot anywhere around the loop and wait for us to get there.
This is a joint hike 3 groups together, the weather is NOT a constraint, the 2 week forecast shows a rainy week ahead but it should clear out by next weekend 🌞. Regardless the weather if we go this far we will do the hike anyway.
