Details
Hello Friends!
READ THIS CAREFULLY BEFORE REGISTERING
To avoid unnecessary frustrations, please note this is a cultural event. Its main objective is to visit the Marcus Aurelius (Marc Aurel) exhibition in Trier (DE). Individual adult ticket is 22 EUR. It’s not a shopping day in Trier. This will come as a bonus.
Programme
We're going to visit the Marc Aurel exhibition. After the huge success of the exhibitions on Constantine the Great (2007), Nero (2016) and the Fall of the Roman Empire (2022), the UNESCO city of Trier is once again inviting visitors to a captivating regional exhibition: this time focusing on Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (121–180 AD). His reign in the 2nd century AD was scarred by wars. Today, however, he is known above all as the emperor of philosophy, and his actions were characterised by a sense of duty and selflessness.
Roman emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius is considered the epitome of a good ruler. Yet what was the life of the man whose “Meditations” later became world literature actually like? Who was he, what shaped him, and what is the ideal picture of a good ruler?
There are two exhibition venues, the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift and the Rheinisches Landesmuseum. We will start with the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift, eventually visit the Porta Nigra, have lunch in a restaurant, visit the Rheinisches Landesmuseum and then we can go shopping depending on participants’ appetite.

Lunch: I’ve been recommended a Georgian restaurant, Tiflis - https://tiflisrestaurant.de/, but we have time to decide.
The Exhibition venues
Rheinisches Landesmuseum: Emperor, Commander, Philosopher
The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier invites you to take a journey back in time to the Roman Empire of the 2nd century, addressing the fascination surrounding Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. In an area spanning around 1000 m2, the archaeological exhibition presents a chronological tour of discovery through the multifaceted life and times of this Roman emperor.
The life of Marcus Aurelius was marked by contrasts: while his long years as heir to the throne were largely peaceful, his reign as emperor was marked by bitter conflicts and campaigns. Above all, however, his love of philosophy and his “Meditations” make him the exception of antiquity and distinguish him from other rulers of his time. In the Landesmuseum, several hundred valuable top exhibits from numerous European museums illustrate the stages of the life of Marcus Aurelius and bring the time of his reign to life.
Stadtmuseum Simeonstift: What is Good Governance?
For centuries, Marcus Aurelius and his “Meditations” have attracted interest not only from rulers, but also from political philosophers, moral philosophers, and artists.Based on this reception history, the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift displays high quality loans from exceptional museums all over Europe to demonstrate how artistic representations of “good governance” have changed over the course of history. When is a period of rule considered good and just and what resonance did these ideas have in art?The exhibition at the Stadtmuseum traces this struggle for good government over eight centuries. The paintings, sculptures, caricatures, photographs and film clips shed light on this question as a fascinating constant in human history with considerable topicality.
