20,000 Species of Bees is a Spanish film about an eight-year-old girl named Coco (Sofía Otero) who realizes her gender identity during a summer vacation with her family in the Basque Country. The film is set in a small village where Coco's mother Ane (Patricia López Arnaiz) and her three children stay with Ane's widowed mother Lourdes (Ane Gabarain), a beekeeper. The film explores the effect her identity has on her family. To help ensure an accurate portrayal, Naizen, a regional association for the families of transgender minors, worked with the director and provided guidance for Otero. (2023)
