After years of writing for Les Cahiers du cinéma, Jean-Luc Godard comes to believe that the sharpest film criticism is a camera in hand. Persuading producer Georges de Beauregard to finance a low-budget feature, he develops a loose gangster story with François Truffaut and sets out to film it with minimal preparation and maximum freedom. Shot on the streets of Paris with improvised dialogue and radical formal choices, the resulting film, Breathless, marks a defining moment in cinema history, signaling the emergence of the French New Wave and a new understanding of what films could be.
By adopting the rhythms, textures, and formal playfulness of the French New Wave, Richard Linklater turns the process of making a movie into the movie itself, capturing a historical moment when freedom, theory, and form collided.
