Recap of 2016: Docker 1.13, Container MELIG

Details

One new-years-resolution is to be a better host. :)

So let's kick it off by looking back to 2016 in terms of Linux containers and MELIG in this regards.

Intro:

  • Refresh audience on Linux Containers (Namespaces/CGroups), contrast to VMs
  • High-level relevance for HPC and High-Performance Big Data
    Progress:
  • Show Docker progress in 2016 (from 1.11 upwards)
    > independent runtime
    > integrated SWARM
    > ingress load-balancing
    > host network-mode
    > docker secrets
    > Looking forward to 1.14 (if possible)
    Ecosystem:
  • Container engines
  • Container Operating Systems
  • Container Orchestration
Explore-List (from last year's State of Linux Containers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gTJj-HuZuo&feature=youtu.be&list=PLfE3_wJGw9KS3PBvqEcDdpiODeDjAs5v8&t=1367)):
  • Small vs. Big Containers: small!
  • One vs. many processes: one!
  • Docker Networking
  • service discovery
  • orchestration
  • immutable containers vs. config mgmt
  • Container Momentum: still hard in HPC, easier in BigData
  • Separation of Concerns: kcompose, shifter/singularity
    New Items for the List:
  • CI/CD: DroneCI, GoCD
  • support of containers in HPC schedulers - or lack thereof
  • service/container discovery
  • monitoring, logging, inventory and OpenTracing
