NEW EVENTS: MTN 2: Snow Camping and Winter Mountaineering FREE PRACTICE Training on Castle Peak

January 23rd - 24th | February 27th - 28th | March 19th - 20th

This is a free practice offered to those who have attended an online MTN 2 training, past MTN 2 trainings, or have equivalent snow camping and winter mountaineering experience documented on their SMC profile. Completion better qualifies you to attend all club climbs and expeditions that require MTN 2 skills.

MTN 2: Snow Camping & Winter Mountaineering is the club's intermediate level mountaineering course preparing members for winter camping, travel and climbing. These dates are held on Castle Peak near Tahoe and involve easy technical mountaineering. Loaner gear is included. With a full 16 hours of focused instruction on the mountain, you'll get a solid understanding of the skills and know-how you'll need to venture higher. We'll go in depth with snow shelters including caves, quinzhees, hybrid shelter and tents, climbing a fixed line, rappelling, winter mountaineering gear, clothing and equipment, review prior navigation techniques, winter backcountry travel skills, advanced map and compass navigation in winter or on glaciers, obtaining water, cooking, and other elements of winter / high altitude basecamp living. All of this will take place on a winter overnight on the mountain in realistic conditions, with the goal of a technical summit of Castle Peak 9,104, near Donner Pass. Maximum 12. FREE. For SMC paid or free members only. Not a member? Join SMC here.

HOW TO ATTEND: Visit and make sure to "sign in" so you will be identified as having a membership. Then put your name on the interest list. Participants will be selected based on attendance of an online MTN 2 training, past MTN 2 trainings, or have equivalent snow camping and winter mountaineering experience documented on their SMC profile.
