All RCK Level 2 Training Events Now Live!

Hello members,

This summer we have continued to refine and improve our rock climbing training offerings to you, the club member, who have supported the dream to make SMC a community where everyone can climb, train, and reach for the peaks together.

I just finished posting all Rock Climbing Level Two (RCK 2) training events for 2016. They are split into Level Two, Day One (RCK 2.1) which is rock climbing protection and anchors, followed by Level Two, Day Two (RCK 2.2), which is a preview and practice in first steps of trad lead climbing. Typically these are going to be offered on the second weekend of every month until the end of November.

We are proud to highlight a few features of the 2016 SMC rock climbing training program:

  • All SMC field training events are now FREE. All you need to do is join the interest list on our official website, and you will be selected based on criteria on your SMC profile.
  • Free loaner gear is provided - harness, helmet, pro, ropes, and even shoes.
  • You can receive preparatory training online - and for this we do charge a fee, and is only available to paid members. Those that take this prep experience will be RSVPed first for the field training, space available. But it is not required to qualify to attend the free field trainings. This fee pays for the online service and helps support club operations.
  • We can hold rock training anywhere - in places you like to climb, such as Donner Summit, Tahquitz Rock, Lovers Leap, J-Tree, etc. Final locations will be determined by the instructor, and we will be able to provide a few dates in So-Cal (finally!)

I hope you will consider the club in your rock climbing goals this year. Please check out the first few months of RCK 2 dates below, and you can view the rest all the way through November at our official website

RCK 2 Online: Intermediate Rock Climbing. For paid members only, $80, 1.5 hr. interactive video teleconference with priority RSVPing for both RCK 2.1 and RCK 2.2. We'll review all that RCK 2.1 and RCK 2.2 entails and get you ready for success. Not a member yet? Join here.

RCK 2 Online dates:  June 1st |  June 29th |  July 22nd |  August 24th

RCK 2.1: Introduction to Rock Climbing, and RCK 2.2: Traditional Lead Rock Climbing Preview. Maximum 10. FREE. Qualify by attending the online RCK 2 training or having prior climbing experience on your SMC profile. These two back-to-back training classes will help you gain comprehensive protection and anchoring skills as well as learning to lead climb on bolts and traditional gear. RCK 2.1 is comprised of an orientation to all lead climbing gear, natural, artificial and fixed protection, placing protection, assessing gear, cleaning, using opposing protection, single point anchors, SRENE, anchor strength, redundancy, equalization, non-extension, v-angle, multi-point anchors, multi-directional anchors and rappelling from those anchors. RCK 2.2 is instruction and practice in lead climbing on pre-placed gear, placing your own gear, assessing gear, clipping the rope, resting, bailing, and falling on lead, transition to lowering or rappelling, racking gear, lead belaying, belaying a second from above, routefinding and strategy. Free loaner gear is provided. Completion places RCK 2 on your SMC profile.

JUNE:  RCK 2.1 June 11th |  RCK 2.2 June 12th

JULY:  RCK 2.1 July 16th |  RCK 2.2 July 17th

AUGUST:  RCK 2.1 August 13th |  RCK 2.2 August 14th
