Machine Learning TO (MLTO) Monthly Meetup

Details
We are excited to announce the return of the Machine Learning TO (MLTO) Meetup! To kick off the reboot of the group, we’ll be meeting at OneEleven for some networking, a tech talk, and some more networking!
As we’ll be restarting the group, for this first event we’ll hear from our group organizers:
- Mario Gibney, Co-founder and Advisor at AIGS Canada
- Myles Harrison, Data Scientist and Trainer at NLP from scratch
Agenda:
6:00-6:30 PM Arrivals and Networking
6:30-7:30 PM Kick-off and Talk
7:30-8:00 PM Network & Wrap-up
8:00-8:15 PM Tear-down and Departures
Tech Talk - Who Needs Machine Learning, Anyway?
Since the release of ChatGPT in November of 2022, the world has been plunged into the age of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI, or the new AI boom. With LLMs making such increasingly rapid and seemingly near-magical advances in their capabilities, it may seem that traditional machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) may be passe, with claims like “ML is dead” and “LLMs killed NLP”.
In this talk, we'll look back on the evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI and discuss the rapid evolution of the field, and how similarities with, and differences from, traditional machine learning approaches places it within the broader domain of artificial intelligence. We'll compare and contrast use cases, capabilities, and the ethical considerations of traditional ML with that of LLMs and GenAI, and how it will inform our views of what to expect in the future of generative AI and language models.
About the Speakers
Myles Harrison is a data scientist and trainer at NLP from scratch, an independent provider of consulting and training in natural language processing and large language models. Prior to this, he was the global lead of the data science program at a tech bootcamp, and worked in data science, analytics, and machine learning at large consulting firms with clients across disparate industry verticals.
Mario Gibney is a generalist focusing on AI catastrophic risk reduction. With a background in humanities and a career that started out as a schoolteacher, Mario became increasingly interested in technological development throughout his 20’s largely due to the growth of both bitcoin and the AI sectors. Starting in 2018, he spent 5 years working for early-stage startups in the bitcoin industry. In 2022, he transitioned to AI Safety by establishing Toronto’s first AI Safety Meetup, and soon after joined Wyatt Tessari L’Allié to work full-time on co-founding AIGS Canada.
