This is a public-service announcement about a series of FREE pickleball lessons for people who’ve never played the game before. And it’s not only one day, it’s for 5 consecutive weeks.
The class is offered thru the Fitchburg Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department but open to anybody, resident or not. It’ll be limited to 12 people attending all 5 Friday sessions from noon to 2 on Courts 11 and 12 at McGaw Park, 5236 Lacy Rd. You’ll have to sign up thru the Fitchburg PRFD website, here:

Any given session is subject to cancellation due to weather; notice of a cancellation will go out 3 hours ahead of time. The first 3 playable days would be devoted to lessons (described below), and any remaining days would be general play with occasional coaching. Balls will be provided, and loaner paddles are available, but you’ll need to bring your own eye protection and a source of hydration. You should wear court shoes or tennis shoes.
Lesson 1: Intro (1.0)
• 50% info: terminology, rules, score-keeping, safety
• 50% play: dink drill, service practice, 1 demo game + 1 real game, each with running commentary
Lesson 2: Learner (1.3)
• 30% info: tips, tricks, techniques, tactics, teamwork, skinnies, safety, etiquette
• 70% play: diagonal-dink drill, service practice, several fast-paced games, some coaching
Lesson 3: Newbie (1.6)
• 15% info: grips, types of stroke, positioning, player communication, court rotations, variants
• 85% play: service target practice, several games, some nagging
