Prima Materia: Reimagining self and the world with Doug Van Houten
Utah Museum Of Contemporary Art, 20 South West Temple, Salt Lake City , UT, USAn experiential evening with artist and nature-based soulcentric human development guide Doug Van Houten as we explore “what the soul is, and where hidden, and what shape,” in the words of Mary Oliver.
Prima Materia: Reimagining self and the world
“Hold to your own truth
at the center of the image
you were born with.” — David WhyteThe reinvention of self and world grows out of imagination, a creative rebirth rooted in images. Our human psyches possess innate resources that await within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them and cultivate their untapped potentials and depths.
Engaging in processes of art awakens and deepens these powers. The expression of our raw images — our prima materia — into visual form invites their inherent mysteries to do their work on us, incubating life-changing intimacy with our souls and with our world.
Consider pairing with the full-day workshop on Saturday: Mystery & Destiny: Working with the nature of soul.

Mystery & Destiny: Working with the nature of soul with Doug Van Houten
Red Butte Garden & Arboretum, 300 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, UT, USMadrona is excited to partner with Red Butte Garden to offer a transformative full-day workshop with Doug Van Houten!
“The work of the eyes is done. Go now and do the heart-work on the images imprisoned within you.” – Rainer Maria Rilke
The language of the soul is symbols. The soul speaks to our everyday consciousness primarily through imagery manifesting through dreams, memories, creativity, and encounters with culture and nature.
This symbolic imagery helps the unconscious mind express itself in a way that the ego can understand and integrate. These images are central to who we are and are imbued with profound meaning, memory, emotion and vision. Such images point toward the mysteries and destiny inherent in a human life.
Together, we will work with deep imagery, movement, and embodied dialogues with the land and wild others as entry points of meaning and significance on your own journey of self-discovery and wholeness.
“This is the first, the wildest and the wisest thing I know: that the soul exists and is built entirely out of attentiveness.” – Mary Oliver
