What we’re about
Why is Magesongs School Of Songwriting different?
Dude McLean, producer and music publisher with credits to many great performing artists such as Abba, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow, and Whitney Houston amongst many other, said "There is no school for songwriters except the school of hard knocks and that school is filled with lies, myths, half-truths, and misinformation. I hear it every day. Some of these myths have been around for over 50 years. Talented, you may well be. Educated about your chosen career--doubtful."
Dude was correct. Unless you've learned through experience and the hard way before achieving success, it's not the classes and workshops you attend that will make you a great and successful songwriter. Most of the workshops you attend ran by some successful songwriters will surely give you tips and ideas, which however unless they continue to sit with you and enter your way of thinking till what you've learned becomes second nature, you are not likely to change your writing habit. Most workshops ran by these successful songwriters end up being about them sharing their success with you.
That is why Magesongs School of Songwriting (MSOS) exists. Dude believes as we do that there are outstanding talents out there that unfortunately do not understand the concept of marketable songwriting which obviously includes the business side of being a songwriter. They get taken advantage of having to pay enormously for a certificate, while you watch how their songs rate in competitions when pitched to music publishers and record labels and you'll get the idea. Songwriting can be more than just a hobby to you if you are committed to learning the talents used by the masters before us. It will make more 'cents' to you when your performing rights society sends you a cheque in the mail for your songs being played on the radio or performed by a reputable artist.
So we have devised a unique and valuable course for people wanting to learn not only the techniques commonly used by successful songwriters but also everything you need to know about the music industry relating to professional songwriting. The course is geared firstly towards helping you know how to shave years off your learning process to achieve success sooner.
This course suits singer wanting to add songwriting to their career, singer-songwriters, lyricists, composers, musicians, producers, and song programmers, indeed anyone who is interested in learning how to create songs that generate income.
If you have attended another songwriting course before and if it made no difference with your songwriting; if your songs aren't getting the interest of music publishers or you aren't receiving any positive feedback from record labels about your songs; if you haven't won any award for your craft at all after trying many songwriting competitions, to even find yourself far from even making the finalists, or you are still making the final listing but someone is always winning over you, we are here to help you achieve your goal. We only take pride in seeing you achieving success, working with you until it happens, as long as you persevere.
Our past students' success speaks for itself. Karen Guymer had a song on hold by Sony Music in Nashville for 6 months for Sarah Evans and other artists; Karen went on winning the Rudy Brandsma Award 2010 and the prestigious ASA/APRA Songwriter of the Year Award in 2015 besides other wins; Anirban Banerjee, has also won many songwriters awards, including the ASA/APRA Songwriter of the Year Award in 2018, the Songsalive Songwriter of the Year 2018 as well as many other wins, and he has been distributed by A&R Department online distribution; Rick Hart also won the ASA/APRA Songwriter of the Year 2014 besides other wins, has signed a publishing deal with Kobalt Publishing and has his songs distributed by Checked Label Services; Lloyd Clarke won 2 Tamworth Awards and also signed with Kobalt Publishing and Checked Label Services. Beside myself having also won the ASA/APRA Songwriter of the Year in 2013 besides many other awards won, many other students have achieved success both in Australia and overseas, winning song video awards, made the top of the charts and have worked for record labels and for APRA. None of these students have had any success prior to doing our course. Some wrote poems, others a zillion of unsuccessful songs while others never wrote a song before.
What about you? You can also join them on this fantastic journey. We show you how; you make the songs, and the songs will sing on your behalf.
Live Web-Conferencing
Every now and then, we will be running some workshops to get you going, if not in your area face to face, online in the form of a Webinar. We have however extended our wings to cater for students from around the globe, with an internet connection and a computer. You pay for the course and not for using the Web-Conferencing website. Please visit the Web-Conferencing Classroom to get familiar with it, however, many tools are made available when the sessions are running. You cannot see some features unless a moderator is in the room and gives you access to them, but you'll get an idea. Password access is currently cmajor.
Note: This is not an online course where you are left on your own to study at your own pace. With online courses, you are generally speaking to a computer where you only read stereotyped materials and answer the questions. In this course, you are connected live to your teacher and to other students as in a physical room except it's happening online. The technology itself makes it more exciting than being in a physical room and you can study peacefully from your home.

Students Testimonials:
"The Magesongs Songwriting course is quite unique and a must for upcoming songwriters who want to make their mark in the music industry. The course not only focuses on Songwriting aspects but also takes you through essential elements of the music industry such as marketing, publishing, record labels, analysis of success stories, royalty, demo submission techniques and provides clarity on where you stand as a songwriter and what you want to achieve. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and also made some wonderful contacts along the way which opened up opportunities for further collaboration and sharing of creative ideas. Jacques is a wonderful mentor and I enjoyed his personal and informal approach of teaching."
Anirban Banerjee - (Canberra, ACT)
"This course has been fantastic for me, as a performer and songwriter I have learned so much about not only successful song structures but also the business side of the music industry. Highly recommend to all."
Karen Guymer (Bentleigh East, Victoria).
"Hi Jacques, I just wanted to say Thank You so much for a wonderful course. I must admit when I signed up for the course I wasn't sure what to expect but it exceeded all my expectations. A big thumbs up to the material covered, but also to yourself for the way you made it all so interesting and also showed great faith and belief in myself and my songwriting. As I have told you before, the creative process has always been the thing that interests me most. Watching a song take shape and come together is something that continues to inspire me to write. However, now I have so many more great tips, tricks and tools at my disposal (thanks to the course). I look forward to growing and developing my craft as a songwriter. I know it will be a hard slog but it is what I want to do so I have to just keep at it. The course has really rekindled my love of writing and I thank you for this too. It's the business side that scares me most but even here I know if I believe in myself and my songs then I cannot accept "NO" for an answer. I hope we can stay in touch and that you wouldn't mind me sending you songs (from time to time) to have a look at.
I really respect what you have to say as I know it is intended to get me to push myself to be the best I can at my craft. Once again, a truly great course and I will sing your praises loudly."
