What we’re about

An Estuary group is a place for genuine, meaningful, mutually-respectful conversations—both within and across political, religious, cultural, socioeconomic, personal, and other divisions.

At each meeting, participants are invited to share something they've been thinking about or a topic they want to discuss, and the group decides together what subjects to pursue further. As the conversation progresses and across multiple meetings, we develop more self-awareness, build a better understanding of each other and our different perspectives, develop deeper in-person relationships, and create a collaborative space to connect with each other and explore ideas without imposing or defending against agendas or dogma.

The name "estuary" points to the rich and complex ecology that emerges in the ecosystem of a river estuary, where the river meets the sea and the fresh and salt waters mix. It is not a single system or monoculture, but a place where multiple worlds meet and interact. The plants and animals who live in an estuary have a foot in more than one community and move freely between them. In a similar way, the Estuary meetup is where people with different faiths, political commitments, and life experiences can learn, share stories, cross-pollinate ideas, understand each other, and work together.

Whether it's your 100th meeting or your first, the format of an Estuary meeting supports participants in having sincere, free-flowing conversations quickly—even among strangers. If the concept piques your interest, please don't hesitate to come try it out! We're looking forward to meeting you.
