Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf is a novel about a socialite preparing for a party in 1923. The book also follows a shell-shocked soldier, and their lives collide as the party reaches its climax.

Mrs. Dalloway is classified as a hallmark of modernist fiction, a period of literature that followed realism. However, due to its stream-of-consciousness style, some literary critics classify it as poetry or, given its post-World War I context, elegy.
