After featuring classic rock, jazz, and blues, MLMAS's fourth in-person listening session will dive into the soul genre. In advance of BMFI's showing of Questlove's 2021 concert documentary "Summer of Soul" on June 4th (friendly plug!), we will showcase the mid to late '60s music of soul artists who performed at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, including standout tracks not performed in the film. The roughly hour-long program will highlight both the diversity within the genre and unifying elements that define soul. I will provide a brief introduction to the program in addition to a listening guide to help facilitate discussion following our uninterrupted listening. This is a free event. No preparation required, only curiosity and a willingness to listen intently. Hope to see you there.
