About us
We seek to connect experienced and aspiring data professionals in Maine by offering an engaging forum to share ideas and learn from each other. Topics include everything from data engineering, analytics, statistics, machine learning, and AI.
The Greater Portland R User Group was initially founded in 2018 as a way to bring the R Users of Portland Maine together. With the hopes of becoming a state-wide user group, we have renamed to the MaineR Users Group.
The goal of this group is to explore and discuss R and how it is being used in data science, data analysis, visualization, data mining, predictive analytics, and beyond!
People of all levels are welcome to attend, from those just getting started with R and predictive modelling to experts using R every day. While the focus is on the R programming language, presentations / talks from other languages/ fields are more than welcome!

R is for Advocacy: From data to decision-makers
Far too many decision makers rely on information backed by very-little (or no) data. With R in their toolbox, advocacy groups can share impactful, data-driven insights with those decision makers, simply by transforming a bunch of numbers in a government spreadsheet into graphics, maps, and reports. We'll talk about packages that align well with advocacy goals; how well R connects with other databases; and a variety of customizable deliverables. p.s. I do a lot of spatial work, so tune in if you like maps.
Christine is the Senior GIS Analyst on the Community Broadband Networks team at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. Christine’s work is focused on illustrating and describing Internet availability and adoption across the United States. Her work supports the team’s advocacy and education efforts centered around developing community-owned broadband networks. She earned her MS & PhD in Natural Resources & Environmental Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
