What we’re about

Make Albany Berkeley Again! is organizing for a petition to put an initiative on the November 2026 ballot to dissolve the Albany charter. The goal is to rejoin the City of Berkeley that once encompassed Albany land or to merge with another larger neighbor to create a more efficient union yielding greater benefit to the residents of Albany.

Dissolving a charter requires an initiative to be voted upon in an election. The initiative must be written in the appropriate legal language; this will require the involvement of an attorney, at least to review language that others have drafted. To get the initiative on the ballot, we must collect the required number of signatures from registered Albany voters. The petitions must be submitted to the City in a timely manner. These steps must be carefully navigated.

The benefits from reforming Albany into another municipality are manifold. These could include a greater tax base to support city services, reduced duplication of services, reduced reliance on property transfer taxes for city revenues, greater diversity, and increased access to programs that provide government transparency and fair policing.
