Over 2.5 days, we'll sketch at Lone Pine's grounds, wander through George Town's heritage streets, sit in tropical gardens and by the sea.

Most of us pass through places with our phones out and our minds elsewhere. We take photos to prove we were there. We move on before we've arrived.

This October, I'm inviting a small group of seven people to Penang for something different. A 2.5-day creative reset where we slow down, look carefully, and draw what we find.

"No prior art experience is needed. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to be a beginner again."

Over 2.5 days, we'll sketch at Lone Pine's grounds, wander through George Town's heritage streets, sit in tropical gardens and by the sea. Each morning begins with a new location. Each afternoon gives you time to wander on your own.
Sketching trains you to notice what your camera misses: the way the trishaw driver leans into a turn, the shadow a shophouse casts at 3pm, the particular green of a frangipani leaf. Penang rewards that kind of attention.

What to expect

## 2.5 days of looking, walking, drawing, and remembering

Day 1 & 2 will be based on a loose schedule which begins at 10.30am and ends at 5.00pm.
Day 3 will start at 10.00am and end at 12.00pm.

Morning sketching sessions at a new location each day. Lone Pine grounds, heritage buildings in George Town, tropical gardens, cafes and the seaside. I guide the group, but there is no right or wrong way to draw.

Relaxed afternoon time to wander, rest, or continue sketching on your own. Penang's streets are endlessly sketchable.

Basic art materials provided for bookings confirmed by 19 October 12pm (Monday). Watercolour set, sketchbook, pencils. You are welcome to bring your own kit or use an iPad.

Maximum 7 participants. This is intentionally small. The group is intimate enough that everyone gets personal guidance and the sessions stay unhurried.

Stay at Lone Pine Hotel or join as an outside guest. The hotel is one of Penang's most beautiful properties, right on the beach in Batu Ferringhi.

## Two ways to join

The retreat fee covers facilitation across all 2.5 days and basic art materials. Accommodation and meals are arranged separately at Lone Pine. For sessions outside the hotel, entry tickets, meals, and transportation are at your own expense.

Retreat Fee
Lone Pine Hotel Guests RM 288 per person
Outside Guests RM 388 per person

Art materials are provided or you may bring your own. iPads are accepted. Maximum 7 participants across both categories.
If you are staying at Lone Pine, please send me your room confirmation to receive the guest rate. For outside guests, some of the retreat sessions are held at the hotel and you'll be my guest to enjoy the grounds on the days we are there.
Who joins us

## You don't need to be an artist

Every person I've taken sketching says the same thing at the end: "I didn't know I could do that." Drawing is not a talent. It is a practice of attention. The hand learns from the eye, and the eye learns from slowing down.
This retreat is for professionals who feel they've lost touch with their creative side. For travellers who want to remember a place more deeply. For anyone who has ever thought "I'm not creative" and quietly wondered if that's really true.
Penang in October is warm, green, and alive. Come and see it properly.

## Reserve your spot

Seven spots only. The retreat runs 22 – 24 October 2026 at Lone Pine Hotel, Penang.

Frequently asked questions
1. Do we have to join all 2.5 days?
No, you can join us for all the sessions or you can choose to wander off on your own. Typically, we'll sketch at up to 3 spots a day. We will have meals together (at your own expense) so you can learn about our local culture and talk to the locals about almost anything under the sun.

2. Do I arrange for my own accommodation and transportation?
Yes, this will give you flexibility on how you want to spend your time. I will share the meetup points so we can either meet there or share a ride and split the fare. We won't go be more than an hour away from Lone Pines.

3. Is there a lot of walking involved?
Yes, there will be lots of walking. Do prepare for rain, sun, and haze.
