This is a fast-paced conditioning hike for intermediate-level hikers and above. We'll start at the corner of Lindero and Wembley and spur off onto the always popular and newly renamed Suicide RIdge trail, before rejoining the main trail to cross China Flats and reach the peak. We'll return by the main route/fire road, making for an 8-miler with about 1900 feet of gain.
Please note that the guest feature is not activated for this meetup. On all my hikes, I expect everyone coming to have signed up themselves, read the write-up, and arrive informed and prepared.
Hope to see you on the trails,
Wally
Our hikes are afternoon conditioning hikes for people hiking at an intermediate level or above, and enjoying time outdoors with fun and friendly people sharing similar interests and fitness goals.
Our hike format emphasizes easy-to-access and scenic 5-8 mile Malibu-area conditioning routes with 1200-2500 foot elevation gains, a relatively fast pace with a single rest stop, and optional technique discussions and conditioning exercises (based on individual and group interest). Total hiking time is normally 2.5-3 hours.
We schedule our hikes as late in the day as the season allows, minimizing hiking in the dark while encouraging people with a variety of schedules to get one or more conditioning hikes in during the week and tune-up for bigger adventures.
Here is info on our scheduled hike…hope to see you there!
Simi Peak From Kanan
Hike Type: Conditioning
Level: Intermediate
Route Type: Up & back
Distance: 7-8 miles
Elevation gain: 1600-1900 feet
Terrain: Trail, footpath & fire road
Dogs allowed: Yes
Route summary:
This hike will take us 7-8 miles roundtrip on a surprisingly athletic but scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid late afternoon views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west.
Our remaining route across China Flat is reasonably level, except for the last quarter mile, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road.
The initial section of our hike is wooded and shaded, but the route gives way to open hillside and then chaparral. Since we begin in a sheltered forest and reach exposed areas above the Conejo Valley, weather can range from calm and humid to quite warm-to-hot and windy conditions. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great late afternoon view there, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the regular route back to our starting point.
